Dear All,

Hello – I’m Lucy Taylor. I have taken over from Katie Willis as SLAS IT Officer and look forward to bringing your regular updates of SLAS news. Contact details for me and other current SLAS committee members can be found on the website: http://www.slas.org.uk/about.shtml

NEWS

Passing of David Fox.

My first duty is unfortunately a very sad one. I must inform you of the death of David Fox, a founding member of SLAS, long-time Treasurer of the Society and a friend to many members. John Fisher has written a tribute to David which is on the website: http://www.slas.org.uk/news.shtml

John represented the Society at David’s funeral and Peter Lambert has written a letter of condolence on behalf of members to Diana, David’s sister. A donation from SLAS has been given to The Leukemia Society as suggested by the family.

2008 Conference.

On a happier note, the details of the 2008 conference are now posted on the website too: http://www.slas.org.uk/conference/index.shtml

Deadlines: 15 October 2007 deadline for proposal of symposia.

15 February 2008 deadline for conference booking.

JISLAC Initiatives

Members might be interested to visit the JISLAC (Joint Initiative for the Study of Latin America and the Caribbean) website. JISLAC manages a British Academy Learned Societies Grant and is running a series of regionally based seminars and two conferences. It also has research grants available: http://www.jislac.org.uk

SLAS Newsletter.

After considerable debate, the SLAS Executive Committee took the decision in our June meeting to adopt an electronic version of the Newsletter. This follows on from a trial period with the electronic version and a consultation questionnaire which elicited 81 responses. A clear majority were in favour of an electronic version.

We are currently developing ideas for the newsletter but aim to produce a monthly e-letter which will serve to alert members to SLAS business and as well as relevant matters such as conferences, events, research funding opportunities, seminar series, resources, exhibitions etc.

We would like to formally acknowledge the hard work and dedication of Liz Allen who produced the SLAS Newsletter in its print format for many years. She kept us all abreast of events and did much to sustain our community of Latin Americanists. We are hugely indebted to her – Thank You Liz.

SLAS Website.

The website is currently being redesigned as part of a JISLAC initiative. The new design should be ready for launch in October.

We would also like to thank Katie Willis who has SLAS IT officer for many years. Katie has built an excellent, informative and extremely useful website and we look forward to building on this considerable achievement.
