BANANAS! A film to be screened at Canning House.
14th March, 18.30 - 20.30 | £6 | 2 Belgrave Square, SW1X 8PJ

Juan “Accidentes” Dominguez is on his biggest case ever. On behalf of twelve Nicaraguan banana workers he is tackling Dole Food in a ground-breaking legal battle for their use of a banned pesticide that was known by the company to cause sterility. Can he beat the giant, or will the corporation get away with it? In the suspenseful documentary BANANAS!*, filmmaker Fredrik Gertten sheds new light on the global politics of food.

One third of the production price of the average banana is used simply to cover the cost of pesticides. All over the world, banana plantation workers are suffering and dying from the effects of these pesticides. Juan Dominguez, a million-dollar personal injury lawyer in Los Angeles, is on his biggest case ever representing over 10,000 Nicaraguan banana workers claiming to be afflicted by a pesticide known as Nemagon. Dole Food and Dow Chemicals are on trial.

The whole region of Chinandega is an ecological disaster zone. The pesticide spray has left its mark everywhere. The soil, the water, the animals, the food of the people are all affected. The level of pesticides in breastmilk is 700 times higher than is acceptable. Some say it will take 200 years for the ground to heal itself enough to produce natural crops again.

One of the pesticides, a DBCP-based compound called Nemagon, was banned in the USA in 1977 for causing male sterility. Standard Fruit—now Dole—continued to use the pesticide in its plantations outside the USA up to 1982.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Peace Studies Journal, Call for Articles
December 2012 Special Issue: "Thinking about Peace Research in 21st century Latin America"

DEADLINE June 1, 2012

The idea for this special issue originated from the Latin American Research Group (LARG) of Peace Studies at the University of Bradford. The Group was initiated and is run by PhD researchers, working on different aspects of peace and conflict issues in Latin America. With the forthcoming publication we would like to initiate a debate beyond the boundaries of our institution on what such a perspective can add to research on Latin America.

Theme for This Issue
With the end of military dictatorships in the Southern Cone and the signing of peace accords after Central American civil wars, most conflicts in Latin America were assumed to belong to the past. Consequently, the region has been overlooked by peace research. Nevertheless, in many countries of the region violence has only further escalated in the last 30 years. Countries such as Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico are now considered to be some of the most violent countries in the world. Fuelling both violent conflict and structural injustice is economic inequality together with impunity, lack of rule of law, and continuing human rights abuses. These issues prompted various theoretical explanations. But a Peace Studies perspective that challenged prevalent definitions of war, conflict and peace is missing from these explanations.

Critical and innovative contributions are invited on distinct Peace Studies perspectives into issues impacting the region. Peace Studies, here, is understood as a multidisciplinary field that explores and understands conflict and its structural issues. Submission, accepted only in English, should contribute to raising new awareness of continuing and new conflicts in the region. At the same time, options to overcome conflicts could be analysed, and examples of encouraging work for peace may be presented. We particularly urge young researchers and practitioners to submit academic articles, fieldwork reports, and book reviews. Examples of thematic aspects include:

Please send your submissions as per issue deadlines to editor@peacestudiesjournal.org.uk. Follow the ‘notes to contributors’ on the journal website for guidance and instructions.

Please include a correspondence address and email address. Manuscripts and Disks cannot be returned.

Consuming Visions: Cinema, Writing, and Modernity in Rio de Janeiro
by Maite Conde

PUBLICATION DATE: February 2012

“Conde has astutely identified a gap in existing literature, namely, a study of the relationship between pre-modernist writers of ‘mass literature’ and film. Highly original and likely to prompt new ways of thinking about film culture.”
—Lisa Shaw, University of Liverpool

The arrival and initial development of the cinema in Brazil were part of a new urban landscape in which early Brazilian movies not only articulated the processes of the country’s modernization but also enabled new urban spectators—women, immigrants, a growing working class, and a recently liberated slave population—to see, believe in, and participate in its future. This explosion of new cultural forms—from cinema to illustrated magazines, department stores, and popular theater—not only modernized literary production, but also altered the everyday experiences of the population.

In CONSUMING VISIONS (February 2012; UVA Press), Maite Conde explores the relationship between cinema and writing in early twentieth-century Brazil. Conde places this relationship in the specific context of turn-of-the-century Rio de Janeiro, which underwent a radical transformation to a modern global city, becoming a concrete symbol of the country’s broader processes of change and modernization. In her analysis of an array of literary texts, from journalistic essays and popular women’s novels to anarchist treatises and vaudeville plays, Conde reveals how Brazilian writers’ encounters with cinema were intimately entangled with the evolution of Rio itself.

Maite Conde is a Research Fellow at the Brazil Institute at King’s College, University of London.
